One of the most useful things Google has recently come up with is the translation function in GoogleTalk. Just add the desired translation bot to your contactlist in GoogleTalk and start to chat. It uses the 2 letter language abbreviation and @bot.talk.google.com so to translate from German to English you should add de2en@bot.talk.google.com to your contact list.
[FromLanguage]2[ToLanguage]@bot.talk.google.com
